I’M all for walking moderate distances. I like doing it, but it’s people with a mindless anti-car attitude devoid of all common sense and reason who are causing the traffic problems in the first place with their senseless road and parking schemes.

Bus lanes where they aren’t wanted or needed, crazy one-way systems that send all traffic out of the town centre but don’t allow it in, a lack of parking, over-zealous traffic wardens with targets to meet who just target those people they see as easy pickings.

Believe it or not, roads have to flow smoothly for the sake of our local economy. Making it difficult to impossible for people to drive in Blackburn will ruin businesses. People won’t walk, or even catch the bus, into the town centre and then buy bags of shopping or large items they have to carry home.

Blackburn Rovers is one of the biggest businesses we have and so we can’t afford for people to decide they won’t go to matches because they’ll end up stuck in traffic all night.

We need a sensible, mature, intelligent attitude to maintaining our roads and car parks rather than pandering to this kind of hysterical, patronising, short-sighted nonsense. This means we need intelligent people on the council who understand business and the economy and can actually see what’s going on around them.
