Calvet Picpoul de PInet 2014, £5, Asda
This white is more than £2 cheaper than normal at this bargain price. Picpoul is an ancient grape variety from France’s Languedoc region and Midi area in the deep south and used to be used in making Vermouth.
Crisp, lemony flavours characterise a pleasantly different white that is only 12% alcohol. Well worth a try.
Abbotts Delaunay Corbieres Reserve 2013, £11.99, Averys.com
Corbieres is another French country wine, this time a red, from the Languedoc region made from a rich blend of Syrah or Shiraz and Grenache grapes which pushes the alcohol up to 13.5%.
The colour is very intense and dark with flavours full of jam and baked fruit as well as hints of tobacco. Best drunk with a Easter roast lamb meal.
