WHILST a lot is made of migration I have to admit one thing.

I have begun to think that a migrant worker is better at doing certain jobs than anyone who is born here.

I know this might not bode well with some folk but let us be completely honest.

If I wanted a road built or a garden excavated I am more likely to get it done quicker and better with someone from a foreign country.

I bring this up after having a conversation with a friend who lives in Dubai.

He was adamant that they could put ten buildings up for every one we construct over here.

I defended my fellow British workers over and over again and said it all had to do with quality.

You see, we British companies take our time and make sure that everything is done correctly – we don’t just to build things for the sake of it.

We do our homework and safety always comes first.

But after 20twenty minutes of driving around the town and seeing unfinished pavements and holes even I had to admit he had a point.

I hate road works with a vengeance but I can guarantee that if I could bring over a team offrom migrant workers over from Dubai they would finish paving the roads in double quick time.

The problem we have is that we take our time at everything and as soon as it is finished the company finds an excuse to dig it up again.

I don’t actually blame the workers but the fact that they have to spend more time making sure some smart Alec can make a claim whilst they were working.

For those not aware, they have these sponge covers for scaffoldings now.

Yes, in case somebody smacks into it. It is going to hurt either way – sponge is not going lessen the pain.

Hey, I’m all for British jobs for British people but I think on some things we should admit that those workers like those in Dubai who work for a pittance are simply quicker at than we are.

I know some time in the future there will be a weekly columnist who will be better at this job than I am and he or she will make my job obsolete.

And good luck to him or her I can say.
