RE: CLARETS star Danny Ings backs new scheme to raise awareness of dementia I am so pleased they are going to introduce the yellow butterfly for dementia patients (LT, January 16). It can’t come soon enough.
My husband was diagnosed eight years ago and, to get to know more about dementia, when possible, I went to the support group at Kingsway.
The butterfly was mentioned on my first few visits and yet everyone I spoke to had never heard of it.
My husband was in hospital quite a few times and no-one knew about the butterfly.
Each time he went into hospital I eventually decided to stay with him for the eight or nine hours a day to look after him. He needed permanent care and there wasn’t enough staff.
I’m sure the butterfly will help but it would need staff to understand dementia.
Sadly, my husband passed away six months ago in his own home, not a nursing home.
Good luck to Danny Ings. I hope the butterflies are soon on the ward.
