Stonehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2014, £7.99, Co-op

It has a style which isn’t quite as blowsy as New Zealand’s Marlborough Sauvignons but has more oomph than the same white grape makes in the Loire – and that’s where South Africa scores.

There’s some zest, plenty of lemon and grapefruit flavours, alcohol at 13.5% and a price which makes this wine from the Western Cape good value.

Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2012, £7.98, Asda

Some excellent Pinot Noir comes out of the Yarra Valley not far from Melbourne, the Australian city that’s just been voted the world’s best place to live in.

The De Bortoli family’s winery has a great reputation and Asda chose well to pick them for their own Extra Special label product. Rich but delicate flavours, 13% alcohol and lovely slightly chilled.
