EAST Lancashire’s miserable May weather is set to continue, with experts revealing that we have already had a month’s worth of rain in just three days.

The area has already been hit by a bizarre series of weather conditions this year, with snow in April and record warm temperatures in March.

But local weather expert Roy Chetham said that May is set to continue to be dogged by wet weather.

He said he recorded that an inch of rain fell in East Lancashire on Monday, and yesterday more than half an inch fell.

Lancashire has an average rainfall in May of less than two inches.

The Environment Agency is warning of localised flooding as heavy rain falls on already sodden ground in the coming days.

He said: “Here in the North West we are used to rain and although southern and central Britain had the wettest on record, for us it was the wettest April in 1998 – five inches of rain fell – 168 per cent on what it should have been.”

Over the next few days for East Lancashire the Met Office has predicted wet conditions until Monday with highs of 12C.

And despite the rain, hosepipe bans will still remain in place in the south until the end of the year.

Roy added: “We will have a slight improvement soon but there will be no prospect of a nice spring or summer and the weather will be unsettled.

“This is only an outlook and miracles can happen – but as for your wellies, you should never put them away in this climate.

“May will not be the wettest one that we have ever had.

“At the end of this month we should be talking about summer but it just doesn’t feel that way yet.”
