WHICH buildings in Blackburn and Burnley should be given an UGLY BUILDING award?

After a Lancashire train station was been nominated for a bad architecture award, we're asking you to tell us which structures — new and old — should join it on the list.

Discussing the topic on BBC Radio Lancashire's breakfast show presenter Graham Liver nominated Barclays Bank in Church Street, Blackburn.

He said: "Lloyds is a stunning building and then in the sixties they thought right let's stick another bank here and the design is just very 1960s and a bit horrible."

Sports presenter Phil nominated the Blackburn Telephone Exchange building in Jubilee Street.

He said: "For a start it looks like it has Jodrell Bank stuck on its roof.

"It's a concrete box with glass. It's not necessarily the building but the context of what is around it.

"If you stand at the bottom of Derby Street and you look up there are nice Victorian shops — albeit most of them are takeaways — but when you look up you can't see the Cathedral and it spoils the view.

"If you removed that building it would be a lot nicer."

People from around the country nominated the structures for the 'Carbuncle Cup' organised by trade magazine Building Design.

The Grade II listed Preston train station was nominated after its side-entrance was given a modern twist.

The publication said: "The residents of Preston took to Twitter in droves to denounce Preston Railway Station’s new entrance which replaced a 1980s building that mimicked the station’s Victorian style.

"Operator Virgin Trains said it was a 'contrasting structure to create a more modern and passenger friendly environment'.

"The residents of Preston clearly preferred the former entrance variously describing the new building as an 'eyesore', 'hideous, 'a joke' and 'planning gone mad'."

The magazine described the station as 'deadening cake tin slapped on its side'.
