Pub crawl in honour of Todmorden soldier is postponed
12:19pm Wednesday 6th June 2012 in News
THE plug has been pulled on a charity event in honour of hero soldier Corporal Jack Stanley.
Cpl Stanley, 26, a former Todmorden schoolboy, from The Queen's Royal Hussars (The Queen's Own and Royal Irish) died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on April 8 after he was caught in a blast in Afghanistan on February 3.
His school friend Danielle Dinsmore had planned a bar crawl on Saturday, stopping off at 28 pubs near the soldier’s home in Littleborough, to raise money for injured troops. But Rochdale Council has told Miss Dinsmore the event does not meet licensing rules.
Miss Dinsmore has postponed the event.
The 21-year-old said: “It’s ridiculous. Jack’s mum Brenda was not happy at all when she found out because loads of his friends from the army had planned to come over. I think he’d got loads of friends from Bolton coming over too.”
Beverley Wilkinson, licensing manager at Rochdale Council said: “We generally require two weeks’ notice to issue a permit for house-to-house or street collections, so ask residents to plan ahead and allow time for the application to be processed.”
The event has been rescheduled for July 15 with donations going to the Jack Stanley Support Fund. For details, visit jackstanley.org.
