Slipway work to save Todmorden homes
1:57pm Friday 2nd December 2011 in News
WORK has started on a major flood prevention scheme in the middle of Todmorden.
Contractors working for the Environment Agency will build a new slipway for the Rochdale Canal to safeguard homes in Commercial Street.
The £150,000 scheme will restore and secure an 18th century slipway.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: “The overflow at Commercial Street is not functioning effectively so, in agreement with British Waterways, we will now create a new replacement overflow further down the canal.
“This will feed any flood waters into a storage area nearby.”
