CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a new Sainsbury’s supermarket in Todmorden are set to be decided tomorrow.

More than 3,000 people have signed a petition objecting to the chain's proposals for land off Halifax Road, and 482 opposition letters have been sent to Calderdale Council.

Market stallholders insist the extra competition will decimate trade and Todmorden Town Council is against the move.

But 82 letters have also been received in support of the application, and a survey conducted by Sainsbury's showed 80 per cent of people were in favour.

An architect has drawn up alternative plans for a marina, on the site of the proposed supermarket, which has been recommended for approval by planning head Geoff Willerton.

Asda is behind another bid to erect a store after bulldozing the former Abraham Ormerod Hospital and Olympia cinema, in Burnley Road.
