THE future of Todmorden Community College is expected to be settled on Monday.

Council bosses in Calderdale insist it would take £750,000 to bring the Burnley Road building up to scratch.

The college, which takes in students from Burnley and Rossendale, is said to be only 40 per cent occupied.

Rival bids have been drawn up by Aldi, which owns the neighbouring old Abraham Ormerod and cinema site, and Incredible Farm, which is behind a proposed new learning centre.

Council executive members have been recommended to authorise talks with Aldi, which has promised a new store and children’s centre there.

Cllr Barry Collins, regeneration cabinet member, said: “This is a real opportunity for us to provide some exciting new facilities for Todmorden and it’s important that we seriously consider all of the options put forward for the future of the building.”

The college has been deemed an ‘asset of community value’, allowing a community bid to be drawn up for the premises while negotiations continue.

More than 560 people have signed a petition supporting the Incredible Farm bid.
