A SENIOR councillor from Todmorden has questioned why Labour has ended its partnership with the Liberal Democrats in Calderdale.

Labour are said to have ended their agreement with the Lib Dems so they can campaign against welfare cuts.

But Coun Janet Battye, Lib Dem leader, who represents Todmorden’s Calder ward, is bemused at the decision.

She said: “They seem to have missed the fact Calderdale Council has no power to stop the programme of benefit reform. That is being pursued by the national government and is designed in part to help reduce the debt the last Labour government left this country with when it lost the election in 2010.”

There are 21 Labour councillors, 11 Liberal Democrats, 17 Tories and two Independents.
