AN East Lancashire nature reserve is up against the Olympic Stadium in London as it vies for the coveted Royal Institute for British Architects Stirling Award.
The Visitor Village at Brockholes Nature Reserve won the North West RIBA Building of the Year during a ceremony at the Queens Hotel, Leeds.
The latest award takes the number of accolades collected by the site, which opened last year, to more than 20.
It was designed by Adam Khan and includes an interpretation centre, restaurant, conference centre, education centre and shops.
Kath Knight, Brockholes general manager, said: “We are delighted to receive recognition at such a prestigious award ceremony. Brockholes is a very special place to work.
“I have enjoyed being part of this exciting project and watching the reserve develop.
“Adam and the Wildlife Trust were keen to make sure the buildings were perfectly suited to their surroundings in the reserve, and to receive the sustainability award is testament to the work that has been done.
“It is great to know we are being mentioned as possible winners of the Stirling Award, but we have tough competition from some fantastic buildings.
“We are simply happy that the work we have done as a small charity and continue to do is being recognised.”
Brockholes was opened on Easter Sunday last year and has had more than 180,000 visitors since.
