FIREFIGHTERS were forced to close the A59 at Samlesbury when a lorry started leaking a corrosive chemical.

Six crews from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called BAE System’s main gates after the lorry driver started to hear the liquid moving around shortly after 1.45pm.

The lorry’s container, which was carrying Glutaraldehyde, a corrosively and toxic industrial chemical had cracked and several litres had escaped.

The A59 was shut in both directions for almost four hours.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters wearing chemical protection suits sealed the container on the articulated lorry and then managed to clear up a small amount that had been spilled on to the road.

“Several crews from Preston including the special chemicals unit were in attendance and prevented the chemical getting into the drains.”
