WHITWORTH’S Civic Sunday procession managed to dodge the inclement weather on Sunday as dignitaries from across the North West gathered in the town.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Whitworth, Councillors David and Lynda Barnes, enjoyed a brief, but welcome, respite from the rain as they made their way along Market Street, led by the Whitworth Vale and Healey Brass Band.
Town councillors and visitors, including the Mayors of Rossendale and Rochdale, enjoyed a service led by the Rev Lyn Woodall, of St John’s and St Bartholomew’s Churches, before a candle-lighting ceremony by the mayor and mayoress’ grandchildren, Charlotte and Elliott.
Coun David Barnes said: “It was a lovely afternoon and we were delighted to see so many people in attendance.
“We were also mightily relieved that the weather held off.
“Lynda and I are thoroughly enjoying our time as mayor and mayoress and are very much looking forward to the year ahead.”
