THOUSANDS of trial bike enthusiasts are set to descend on Rossendale for the final of the Red Rose British Championship Trial.

Bosses at Back Cowm Quarry in Whitworth are hoping the national event will put the Valley on the 'map as a adventure sport hotspot’.

In recent years, Rossendale has become popular for adventure sports attracting visitors from across the country to Ski Rossendale, Lee Quarry, Bacup, and Whitworth Watersports and Ski Centre.

Earlier this year, 2012 Olympic trial bike hopefuls visited Lee Quarry to hold a master class with youngsters.

John Whittle, director of Back Cowm Quarry, said: “We are expecting thousands of fans to come down and support the bikers in the final of the British trial bike championship.

“We held this event in 2004 and it was really popular so we are hoping for the same success.

“It is great Rossendale and Cowm Quarry are being considered for adventure sports, events like this really help us to establish our place on the map.”

Around 50 riders are expected to compete for the British championship title on October 2. They will compete in three separate catergories at the Tong Lane quarry.

Whitworth councillor Thomas Aldred said: “It is great news Rossendale can once again welcome a prestigious event like this.
