A WATERFOOT youngster has designed a pair of wellies fit for Glastonbury.

Courtney-Lea Reader, a Year 8 pupil at Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads took part in Bacup’s Wynsors World of Shoes Design a Welly competition’.

The youngster who designed brightly coloured floral wellies, with a festival audience in mind, has been hand picked as one of 32 regional winners.

Courtney-Lea said: “I was shocked when I found out I had won.

“I really like art in school and I am going to pick it at GCSE but I want to become a chiropractor.”

The 13-year-old also won a £50 Wynsors voucher and was quick to spend her winnings on more shoes, including some Hi-Tops from Pineapple Dance Studio, which she said was not something she would normally have been able to buy.

All of the entrants were asked to create a pair of wellies with the theme of ‘festivals’ in mind.

All the regional winners will now battle it out to become the overall winner, who will have their wellies manu-factured and sold in Wynsors World of Shoes stores across the country.

Footwear bosses are expecting to make around a thousand pairs of the winning entry.

Head of Expressive Arts at Fearns, Charlotte Walsh said: “Pupils from all different years took part and we submitted around 50 entries to the competition.

“We were delighted that a pupil with such artistic flair has achieved this recognition for her efforts. The wellies she designed are a very funky design and really appropriate for the festival theme.”

Retail manager at Wynsors Lee Gomersal said: “The colour contrast was great, simple but effective.

“We made the design into a one-off priceless pair of wellies.

“When I presented her with the prize I was pleased to see that her school shoes had also been bought in Wynsors.”

The national winner of the wellies competition will be announced in a few weeks time.
