Abandoned car in Waterfoot sparks 999 crew access fears

A CAR has been dumped in a Rossendale street causing concern among residents.

The blue Suzuki Wagon was abandoned in Park Road, Waterfoot, almost a week ago, residents said.

And they fear the vehicle, which is two foot away from the kerb, could prevent an emergency vehicle from passing if there was an incident.

Nigel Birch, of Park Road, Waterfoot, said the vehicle was left outside his house last Wednesday and had not moved since.

Mr Birch said: “The car first appeared last Wednesday. On one side of the street there are semi detached houses with driveways and on the other side there are terrace houses.

“All the residents park on the terraced houses side of the road to allow access to the driveways and to give vehicles using the road more space.

“This car has literally been dumped making it very difficult to manoeuvre past.

“If there was an emergency an ambulance or fire engine would struggle to get past it, especially if another vehicle was parked on the opposite side.”

The father-of-one visited all his neighbours but nobody knows who it belongs to.

Mr Birch said: “Nobody knows anything about the car. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had been stolen and dumped there.

“I rang the police but they said they couldn’t help me for at least another week because it is taxed and not violating any parking restrictions.

“That’s why I’ve decided to appeal directly to the owner to move it, in case it has been stolen and they are looking for it.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “Council’s in Lancashire do not have the powers to remove vehicles.

“In this case the vehicle is taxed and is not parked in a restricted place.

“The residents have done the right thing reporting it to the police.”

A police spokesman said: “At this stage this is not a police matter, this is an issue for the local authority.”

Suprised The Times hasn't picked up on this, can the LT get a live news ticker so we can get minute by minute updates on the situation?

Its taxed and is parked legally. If parking legally on that road causes these issues then surely the correct thing to do is to get double yellow lines painted ... something that the residents wouldn't like as it would be awkward for them not to be able to park outside their own homes. Maybe they have shot themselves in the foot by drawing attention to it.

How is that two feet away from the edge of the kerb? Unless it is a very bad picture.

There is no way that it was two feet away from the kerb, I drove past it myself. Cars park on the opposite side of the road as well but as the Suzuki hasn't moved it must be the others that are guilty of double parking!

If it's in the way, couldn't the Police contact the owner (Reg. No could be traced) and ask if it has been left or possibly stolen and not reported yet?

There are complaints about this after just one week ! Try going up newline you will see several cars parked there that don't move for months ! Can the residents who can't park outside their own homes do anything about it ? NO is the answer, you really want to hope that this car doesn't belong to the same person if it does all I can say is GET USED TO IT, oh and if he moves it the chances are he will replace it with another. The residents have been to the police, the council and our councillor about it and we are told ' Sorry the car is taxed nothing we can do'

seriously? Its parked just less than a foot away from the kerb and has been there just a week! Somebody is probably gonna get back from holiday to see that there car has been advertised to every car criminal in Rossendale whilst they've been gone. You could fit an ambulance and a fire engine side by side past this car

Nolando,if a car was parked opposit nothing else could get through,so please don`t get a job driving a fire engine or a ambulance. It might have been just a week but who ever owned it did not live round here and nobody takes up the room of 3 cars with just 1, like this one did(bet it was a woman).

So .... so long as nobody parks opposite to this "abandoned" car then there is no issue? I take it that vehicles have been able to travel past it up to now?

Looking at the photo I would say the car is perfectly parked. It certainly doesn't seem to be two feet away from the kerb as the story suggests.

You could say if a car was parked opposite any other parked car it would be an obstruction. I don't get your point. This car wasn't parked any different to the cars that frequently park on there. It makes no difference if it wasn't a locals car. Some people seem to believe the public road outside their property belongs to them.
