1,000 wait for affordable homes in Bacup and Stacksteads

MORE than 1,000 people are on a waiting list for affordable housing in Bacup and Stacksteads, councillors have been told.

Council housing bosses admit there is a desperate shortage of low-cost accommodation in the adjoining towns.

Currently there are 608 applications lodged with the authority’s choice-based lettings service, wanting to live in Bacup and Stacksteads, and another 477 who may be eligible to live there following a housing assessment.

The letting service operates a points based system and waiting times can vary according to individual status.

The revelation came as members of the borough’s development control committee debated proposed alterations to 11 soon-to-be-built homes in Pendle Avenue, Bacup.

These properties would be managed by Burnley-based Calico Housing Association and offered as affordable homes.

Under the amendments, the new homes would be reduced from two-and-a-half storeys to two, with existing plans for integral garages deleted.

Planning official Adrian Harding, speaking on behalf of the council’s regeneration department, said: “There is certainly 600 people looking to live in that area and a further 400 who could be eligible.

“There is quite a need for that kind of housing in Bacup and Stacksteads.”

But neighbours feared that the arrival of housing association tenants could lead to a rise in anti-social behaviour and affect house prices.

People living nearby also claimed that the proposals would lead to parking problems along the steep Pendle Avenue.

Residents spokesman Anna-Marie Sautejeau said emergency vehicles and refuse wagons already struggled with the access route.

Councillors agreed to alter the homes plans, subject to a legal agreement with Calico over the ownership and rental of the properties.

I feel sorry for anyone living in Stacksteads or Bacup.
They are the utter pits - their twin town should be Chernobyl, except the residents of Chernobyl would be insulted to be associated with anywhere in the Rossendale Valley.

Please remember, some people love where they live, and just because thats your opinion, doesn't mean that everyone agrees.

Maybe some people think where you live is grotty !

well cyberpaul, i wouldnt live in Blackburn even if it was the last place left on earth....., in fact i would not even venture into your town - But each to there own eh.

Are you calling people who live in Stacksteads/Bacup the utter pits or the town itself... thats not a very nice statement about people you dont know, dont tar all residents of Rossendale with the same brush as the idiots that give every town a bad name (including yours) because Blackburn is not free from the same drugs/anti social behaviour that plagues every town in the UK, not just Bacup/Stacksteads!

There are some very nice places in Rossendale and even in Stacksteads/Bacup, you would be amazed at some of the views from places just minutes walk from the same places you have just slaughtered.

Everyone knows Bacup is a dump, but they also know Blackburn is a grot hole.

There's so many empty buildings in Bacup they should get them demolished and replaced by affordable housing.

Alternatively perhaps one of the alleged terrorist bombers from Blackburn should drop one on Bacup. That way they can start the town again from scratch.........

calling bacup a dump is laughable from somebody from down the valley. The biggest dump in rossendale is rawtenstall. At least bacup has a town centre and some lovely buildings also some very nice people so anyone calling bacup should look in their own back yard first
