YEAR six students from a Stacksteads school paid their respects to the fallen by decorating Remembrance Day poppies and observing a two-minute silence.
The Holy Trinity CE Primary pupils, who are aged ten and 11, took part in a service at the Peace Gardens in Toll Bar alongside Year 6 pupils from St Joseph’s Primary.
Students at Holy Trinity are currently learning about World War Two, such as the stories of evacuees, how rationing worked, what air raid shelters were and how many children their own age were affected by the conflict.
Samantha Marsden, a teacher at the school, said: “The children observed the two-minute silence impeccably and their behaviour was excellent, we are very proud of them.
“They were very respectful of the event.
“They drew on the poppies to decorate them, which were then attached to a large wreath during the service.
“It’s very important for our children to learn about World War Two and part of the work we’re doing is studying different aspects of the war and different conflicts.
“Children in lower years have been participating in their own way, by discussing issues around World War Two and decorating their own wreaths.
The youngsters also listened to a speech commemorating the efforts of the armed forces in past and present conflicts by Rossendale’s Mayor, Coun Amanda Robertson.
