Bacup where the senseless killing of Sophie Lancaster took place
THE murder of Sophie Lancaster brought Bacup under intense national scrutiny and left its residents facing difficult questions: How could youths brought up in the town have carried out such an appalling crime? And what is life like for young people in Bacup?
A MURDER in a small town like Bacup is shocking enough.
But the killing of Sophie Lancaster was so savage, so depraved, that it sent reverberations far beyond Lancashire, igniting once again the debate about the society which can produce people who seem to have no connection to ordinary human values.
Sophie and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were targeted by a group of drunken youths just because they were dressed differently.
All the youths involved were from Bacup. All had been drinking, and like so many towns Bacup has its fair share of problems with teenage drinking.
Nevertheless, Sergeant Gordon McGeechan, who works on community engagement in the town, believes that Bacup should not be labelled a bad town because of a small number of yobs.

He said Sophie and Robert were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"It could have been anyone those lads attacked that night with the frame of mind they were in," he said.
Sgt Gordon McGeechan and PCSO Nick Stratton
"It's just unfortunate that it happened to be Sophie and Rob who were attacked on that night because they stood out and were an easy target.
"They could have beaten up a lad because he was wearing a pink T-shirt."
He said the problem of gangs of youths in Bacup was any worse than in other towns but there were traditional rivalries between groups from different areas of town.
He said: "It's not like they're all walking about with knives but they have their own identity. They all wear Nike Air Max or all wear dark clothes.
"A lot of them are followers, not leaders."
His colleague, PCSO Nick Stratton said: "Individuality has always gone on in Bacup.
"We've still got punks walking around but people perceive them differently.
"Bacup is quite introverted. There aren't any big clubs here or anything like that.
"That's why it was a shock to us that there had been a fight where someone had died."
Bacup usually just wrestles with some of the lower-scale drink-related problems.
There is currently an alcohol control zone in the centre where anyone caught drinking can be asked to give up the drink.
If they refuse, they can be given an £80 fine.
Since Sophie was killed, police have seized 236 cans of drink and 24 litres of cider from kids drinking on the streets.
This are similar to other East Lancashire towns.
And drink-related violence has plummeted in Bacup since with just one incident taking place.
But concerns persist about youths drinking.
Police have been trying different ideas to get youths off the streets.
They recently arranged a meeting with youngsters to see what facilities they would like to see in town.
Sgt McGeechan said: "Only 16 turned up which was disappointing, but we are still willing to listen.
"We are looking to set up sporting activities in the town centre to encourage the kids.
"We just need to get them interested in doing these things."
Sixth formers at Rawtenstall and Bacup Grammar School agreed there could be more to do for teenagers. A cinema is high on the wish list.
Andrew Walsh, 16, said he tried to "defend Bacup to death" and that groups gathered in all towns, not just Bacup. He said: "I've only ever been to Stubbylee Park during the day so I don't know what it's like at night.
"There are a lot of chavs' around and if you say anything to them they kick off.
"There's always drunk people walking around at all times of the day.
"There's nothing to do in Weir. You've got to get the bus everywhere. There's a bus that goes to Manchester but that's just been introduced."
Leah Collinson, 18, said
"There's a big drink problem with young people and after 6pm you won't see the police on the streets. There's nothing for kids over a certain age so they all hang around outside the library. They closed the swimming pool and we didn't get another one."
Eighteen-year-old Jed Hull, works part-time in a pub and participates in theatre groups. He said the former bingo club should be turned into a cinema. He said: "The nearest one is in Rochdale, Burnley or Accrington.
"There's only one group and you're either in it or you're not. They hang around in massive groups in town."
Coun Alan Neal said a small minority is giving the rest a bad name.
He said: "It's fine for little ones but there aren't a lot of provisions for 13 to 17-year-olds.
"I know the Judo Club does a lot of work with youngsters and Bacup Borough Football Club are brilliant.
"Sophie's murder was a one-off incident because 99.9 per cent of kids in this town are doing great things and they never get any recognition.
"It is high time we started taking back some control and making people respect other people's views and their property."
A 31-year-old dad from the town, who wished to remain anonymous said when facilities were provided "they just wreck them all".
He said: "There was a playground on the Sandfield Road but that just got burnt down."
Janet Helm, from Britannia, was a youth worker in Whitworth for five years and now runs Guides groups in Bacup and Stacksteads.
She said: "This incident got totally out of hand and because of the coverage it looks as though there are large numbers of people in Bacup who behave in this way.
"But I can't imagine it is any worse here than anywhere else.
"It doesn't bother me to walk on my own through Bacup at night."
Rossendale East county councillor Jimmy Eaton has been campaiging to have the alcohol ban extended.
He said: "These kids that hang around are intimidating as it is without them drinking as well. We need to get them off the streets.
"When the lighter nights come they play football and cricket but there isn't a lot else for them to do.
"I do know the kickboxing in Stacksteads is really popular.
"They've tried showing films at the leisure hall.
"Most people can go to the cinema but the kids neeed to be dropped off and picked up.
"Many years ago, an incident like that at Stubbylee Park, would never have happened.
"It might have just been a fight and that was it, but not anymore."
Let's get one thing clear - this was not 'a fight where someone died'. It was an unprovoked attack on 2 people who were being friendly towards their attackers. It should not warrant yet another cry of 'there's nothing for young people to do'. There was nothing to do when I was a youngster either. This is about lawlessness, about people having children without thinking ahead to whether they can be bothered to look after them and about anti-social behaviour not being tackled severely enough the first time it is committed. This was an attack by feral yobs on innocent victims, let's not kid ourselves otherwise.

Big Business is here to exploit Teenagers as much as anyone else.
If they are in a poor area, they are not an attractive enough investment for big business.

This is about Drunken Violent Behaviour. Not the behaviour of Young People.
This is about 2LTRS of 1.99 Cider being made cheap and available to anyone with 1.99 to spend.
This is about Alcohol being aggressively marketed and easily made available to young People who are disturbed, bored and exploitable for the sake of profit.

Yes, alcohol may further fuel their violent, thuggish behaviour, but to simply blame underage drinking and drink prices for a vicious unprovoked murder is ridiculous.

Laughing, joking and sneering at Sophie Lancaster's mother outside the courts...?
That in itself should give some insight into their upbringing;the alcohol was merely the 'detonator' connected to a bomb that would have gone off sooner of later anyway...

Dont blame it on a "poor" area or cheap drink and please dont think all young people in Bacup are the same.
Rob is a "young person" who lives in Bacup he also lives by a code but a very different one than these thugs, one that respects others.
Sophie was also a "young person" who also lived by the same code as Rob and sadly died because she helped the person she loved.
So please dont cheapen what happened by classing all of Bacups young people as druken thugs (I to have 2 "young people" who live in Bacup)
Please show some respect for Sophies family and Rob (and his family) and there feelings.
When it comes to the bottom line it is the parents of those Thugs that should be ashamed of themseleves and the way they have brought up their children, they have condoned everything they have done and sadley take great joy at having kids that cause trouble
I wonder if when all this sinks in those parents will still be happy their kids caused so much pain to others.

It says all of the people involved were from bacup, they weren't two were from whitworth and one originally from stacksteads so surely that goes to show the problem isn't centered on young people from bacup these people were just evil and had no morals not every youth in bacup should be put under the same category as these animals!! Where they are brought up is not the problem the problem is what where they doing at a park at that time of night? and why if they had previously been in trouble for that sort of behavior were they not on cerfew or better in prison?

herbert, harris, the hulmes and mallett are violent psychopaths from different towns and different circumstances. I live on the pennine estate, I work, do not claim benefits except child benefit and bring my children up properly, so do a lot of other people here, we are not all the same and are sickened and saddened by this tragedy and sick and insulted at being compared to these low lifes.

well said council house tenant . ppl are all getting tarred with the same brush here. I am not a council house tenant but that doesn't make me any better than anyone , i do work but that doesn't make me necessarily better either.
the only council tenant i think was herbert, harris lives on spring terrace which are not council houses, the brothers lived in caravans on the hills and as for mallett ,i'm not sure but that area is supposed to be quite alright.
However, what i do think is that all these boys have had evil in them from a young age and have been attracted to each other like magnets cos they were all like minded thugs

the youth cry theres nothing to do???? pathetic excuse!!
And what a sign of the greedy times!
Where growth of economy is destroying nature and sending earth and civilisation out of kilter.
I'm what they call in the usa a baby boomer, born in the early fifties, not long after ww2 in my middle years and lived in bacup all my life and in my playground whither up i th hills or down town, all sorts of people roamed all over the place, only the rich had a telly or a car, and the rest of the people got on with each other fine in the main and except for the odd scuffle all over and done with in one push slap or punch, [bold]never ever[/bold] owt like this, that poor girl and boy. If there were a bloodied nose it was a grand drama but fight fair and [bold]never ever,[/bold] specially dont hit a woman. Most of us then were happy with what we had, who we were, most had modest ambitions, and lads were quite chivalrous, people were polite in the main, nowadays, though there's still loads of nice kids, many kids are badmannered ignorant agressive arrogent disatified spoiled brats. Too much information too fast for many of them or loss of tradition leading to loss of identity perhaps. brainwashed by commercialism media whatever, unsuitable role models, there are no excuses they knew the difference tween right and wrong. And its wrong to kick and stomp on sophies head, wether they'd had a cinema or a swimming pool or a bowling alley doesnt matter, they werent deprived of material things or distractions they were a blend of their genes and deprived of a proper upbringing but they still knew it was wrong but they didnt care because it entertained them. Then theres rap music, violent videos and games, gangsta culture, alcohol, bad parents whatever, I still think they knew it was wrong, if not why not???

Born n bred - your sentiments echo mine. It's no good anyone trying to come up with a reason for why they did this. There is NO excuse.
I have read many posts about what happened to Sophie and Rob, and many mention the unspoken code of it 'never being ok to hit a woman'. I also happen to think this should apply to males also. Yes people fall out, and yes people will fight, but gone are the days of it being one on one and for a specific reason. What we are seeing now is violence for the sake of it, gangs attacking single people. Cowardly thugs who can only operate in numbers and target decent human beings who are no threat to them whatsoever. It makes me sick.

I think people are missing the relevant points that alcohol played in this discusting act of violence. Let us just think what drink does nationwide, We hear about the numorouse attacks that take place in our hospitals on innocent nurses and staff, about attacks on ambulance and fire crews by youths high on cheap drink, we have to put up with all the aggrivation that takes place most nights around these cheap drink outlets. remember how it used to be when drink was confined to pubs, clubs and off licences, It was controlled to an acceptable degree, if a landlord saw that a person had to much he sent them home, if an off licence was thought to be selling to youngsters or known trouble makers he had the licencing authority on his back, plus we need to look at the adult roll models we have at the moment, these can be seen at a lot of venues in rossendale, just ask the pub watch members and they will give you a big list. Its about time that all these cheap outlets were closed down or visited every week by the authorities to keep them under strict control, The councillors, licence controllers, police, and government are all failing in there duty to nip this problem in the bud, but nobody is willing to go down this road because big business call the shots, allways have done and allways will. WHO WILL BE THE NEXT SOPHIE AND WHO WILL TAKE THE BLAME? God bless Sophie and keep you chin up Rob........Put drink back were it belongs, IN THE PUB, it is a dangerouse substance and gives adults and youngsters liquid courage to do all manner of things. I should know I had five alchoholic aunties and uncles

I disagree with the headline, Bacup is NOT the same as any other town, it is an example of one of the worst towns in the UK. Run down, dirty and with more than its fair share of thieving, violent drug and alcohol fueled feral scum for years, and the reason I moved from the town of my birth to somewhere nicer. Maybe the tragic murder of a young girl will make a difference, but until the town is cleared of the scum families, I won't hold my breath. But I too hold the council and lax alcohol laws and parents partly responsible but we all have choices and those thugs chose to drink and chose to attack an innocent couple. They should be publicly flogged then hung in bacup centre, that might get a message into the rest of the thick skulled inbreds, prison to them is a badge of honour, for many of them their only ambition is to be a lifer.

I was in Stacksteads - which is just along the road from the park - at about 10pm on Friday. Under-18 boys were shopping for booze at the off-licence in plain sight and hanging about in a group nearby. No police presence at all.

Even though that is still a minority and most people realise that, that figure is unacceptable.

i am a teenager that lives in bacup and yes there is nothing to do around here but that is no excuse for wat they did i know tha lads that did this and that sickens me!!! but not all of us are like them i would never dream about doing that to anybody not even my worst enemy they are just pure evil and there parents are just as bad because why were there young children out at that time for anyway i know y um would never have allowed that and she would mmost definetly not stand by me if i did something like that let alone laugh about it!!!!!!!!! so please do not tie us all with the same brush as some of us are actually decent young people who want to get some where in life not like them!!!!!!!
Bacup is not like any other town and I am not demonising all young people, but the average town in britain has a (13-19yr old)youth offending rate of about 8% whereas in the bacup area its 15%, with violent attacks higher than average. Even though that is still a minority and most people realise that, that figure is unacceptable.
