The sickening sight of Joseph Hulme, who admitted GBH on Sophie's boyfriend Robert Maltby, laughing on his way into court for an earlier hearing
THREE teenagers who were involved in the attack on Sophie Lancaster's boyfriend have today been jailed and can be named for the first time after the judge lifted an order banning the press from identifying them.
Brothers Joseph, 17, and Danny Hulme, 16, both of Landgate, Whitworth, and Daniel Mallett, 17, of Rockcliffe Drive, Bacup, all pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent on Robert Maltby.
They did not take part in the attack on Sophie, the court was told.
Anthony Croft, representing Daniel Hulme said that the boys' parents were ashamed of what their sons had done.
Mallett was described as a "young man of real quality" by David Fish QC but he had been put on a curfew for a separate offence following Sophie's death.
Judge Russell jailed Mallett for four years and four months and the Hulme brothers for five years and 10 months each.

well even if they are and i know hindsight is a wonderful thing but these 2 have been in trouble before for attacking ppl and were always roaming the streets, so the remorseful parents already knew they were at risk of doing it again. So what was there answer? To allow them to be out in the early hours of the morning 2 miles from home ? It's disgraceful .

they knew that thier sons were out late at night and that they had beaten people up before this happened with sophie,an incident that happened only months before involving those two left a boy in hospital after being beaten up by them,and that wasnt the first or last time it happened.the hulme boys mum knew what they were up to but chose to ignore it,so she should be ashamed of them and herself for not doing the job of being a decent parent

Any parent who supplies there children with drink and sits by watching them get drunk, allows them to roam the streets at all times, is not a fit parent. they can not go round saying "not my boys, they are good lads" anymore. They have just got some of what they deserve. hope fully they will get more inside!!!

by the look of triumph of Joe Hulme's pic on here and from what has been said about the others' conduct in court ie.winking and grinning , then it seems that they feel they have celebrity status through all of this with no regard whatsover for the number of lives they have destroyed physically or emotionally.

Well, Well, Well, why does this not surprise me what has happened??? In the 90's I lived in Bacup and we were broken into and burgled, also someone had tried to set our house on fire. At that time 2 families who are related to each other,ran the estate of Bacup and every time I went to the police for help, they just said, can't do anything. Yet I was always threatened by these Families after I had been to the police. They painted the following on my window one night: CALLING 999 IS A WASTE OF TIME!!! The police were frightened of these Families! That is the only conclusion I can make for the police not helping us. So, it comes to NO surprise to me that this murder has happened, yes, I do blame the police partly for this, for things coming this far. Why?
Because if at the time when I lived there and the police would have done something, then things might have changed today. If the police would wanted to be aware of what was going on and not sent me home, then I daresare that things would have turned out different. However, to be laughing on his way into court just goes to show how ill mannered , inconsiderate and insensitive he is.It was NO laughing matter whatsoever. He should have been showing respect for Sophie and Robs' families not laughing .
As for whether he or the other 2 ( Danny & Daniel) took part in the attack on Sophie , we
will never really know. Perhaps there was not enough evidence on them , but even if they didn't , they still stood there and allowed it to happen . Also, if you have known them all their lives, you will also know that this was not their first attack . They have also been causing trouble around Shawforth for years . So don't try to defend them on here and if I were a "very close friend" of theirs, I would be choosing my friends more carefully in future.

You need to sit down VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF JOE AND DANNY,and ask yourself this (if you have the mentality to understand this message.)If leaving a man with brain damage,and changing his life forever by killing sophie,and their families...Because the reality is,that is what they have done,is ok with you,then you are bigger SCUM than them.They are the dregs of society,as you are yourself for trying to defend them in anyway.Why not defend rob and sophies mum???These are the people whos lives this has destroyed.They were all to blame,only they got away with murder..GBH with intent// should have been MURDER...They left two innocent people to die,ran away bragging about what they had done,washed themselves off in the car wash.Not one of them stopped the violence,and lets not forget,,Rob has brain damage,almost died himself,and now lives in fear.You lowlife scum,should stop coming on this thread with your defence for this SCUM,get it through your head,this was one of the most brutal attacks seen by the police,and you should hang your head in shame,but,people like you SCUM do not have the gumption to understand..show some respect.

all members of the gang of thugs who attacked sophie and rob that night whether they took part in this evil deed or not should have been charged with ACCESARY TO MURDER. Whatever happened to this charge? has the law been changed or am i missing somthing?

Just like Joe and Danny's "very close friend" it annoys me when people think all of today's youth are the same, this isn't true. For example, it sickens me to think that I'm such a close relative of these complete and utter idiots. I'm nothing like them and I don't even want to be named as part of their family any more. They should have been sentenced to longer for being so disrespectful of other people. That should be a crime in itself.
