RAWTENSTALL police have issued a warning to people who steal registration plates.
Officers said thieves been taking plates in order to steal petrol at garages.
A plate was stolen from a motorbike in Sunnybank Street on April 23.
Crime prevention officer PC Phil Buck said: "We have a forecourt watch scheme which alerts all garages when plates are stolen.
"It seems to be on the increase and I would urge motorists to be on the look out and report incidents of theft immediately.
"The taking of a registration plate may not seem like a serious offence but the thefts are being used to facilitate other crimes. Those planning to steal petrol using stolen registration plates will not get away with it."
