Go-ahead for Rawtenstall's new £3.2m bus station

PLANS to build a new £3.2million bus station in Rawtenstall will finally go ahead after funding has been secured.

Lancashire County Council has announced it finally has the cash to invest in a new state-of-the-art bus interchange in the Valley after more than seven years of delays.

Town Hall bosses say precise plans of how the station will look have yet to be finialised but initial indications show the bus station will be placed on the existing site in Bacup Road with planners looking at a completion date of 2015.

Coun Tim Ashton, County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “I'm very pleased that the council's strong financial management has allowed us to invest in a number of projects which will make a positive difference to Lancashire in the long term.

“The new bus station at Rawtenstall will be just one lasting legacy of this investment.

“We will continue to work closely with Rossendale Council to ensure that it adds maximum value to the redevelopment of the Valley Centre and makes public transport a better and more comfortable option for local people.”

Initial plans for a new bus station were drawn up in 2004 but had to be shelved because of a lack of funding.

Rossendale Council leader, Coun Alyson Barnes, said: “This is good news for Rossendale.

“It demonstrates clearly that in taking control of the Valley Centre we are giving confidence for other organisations to invest in the Valley.”

Redevelopment plans for the town’s dilapidated Valley Centre are to be considered at a planning meeting tonight. If approved, it would see the immediate demolition of the existing derelict buildings and creation of a public square.

I wonder what will be so 'state of the art' about it. The only thing state of the art about Nelson and Burnleys bus stations were the electronic timetable displays, now they've turned them off.

Automatic doors hardly make it state of the art...

As a Valley resident I am obviously pleased to learn that the bus station project is back on track however I feel very disgruntled about the process which led to this.

It is my understanding that the County Council witheld support until the Valley Centre was 'out of the picture'. It is hardly surprising then that Rossendale Council put such great efforts into buying the Valley Centre!.

I am deeply disappointed in both my local & county councils for not being more open as the Valley Centre/Leisure Centre issues have created a lot of ill feeling here in the Valley. Are we children that we cannot be given full facts from the outset?

What's the point of spending all that money when they are axing buses left right and centre?

Well said Soup123 & Fuchsia!.

Rossendale Council has publicly said that money is tight (which is hardly surprising the way it has been spending over the last few months) so, if the bus station ever materializes, it will no doubt be a 'clone' of those metal & glass monstrosities with no character & will need demolishing in a few years time. The local bus company is suffering competition from larger competitors so that too will probably disappear before too long and we really won't need a proper bus station!

My thoughts exactly, soup123.
They open these places with a fanfare of trumpets and claims of technology blah blah blah, then switch off the information boards. I believe they also planning to switch off the clock at Nelson bus station as well.

i am so pleased that rossendale council is finally putting rawtenstall to right, a new bus station to go with whatever they decide to do with the valley centre, whatever the new bus station will look like it will be a lot better than the one that is there now, rossendale needs to move with the times

How many people actually stand in Rawtenstall bus stop? I have the 'pleasure' of standing in it 2 to 4 times a day currently with work and college and I can assure you it is money well spent.

But then again it wouldn't be the LT if people didn't moan about everything. The most depressing thing in Lancashire isn't the run down buildings or the crime, it's most of you lovely people constantly moaning!

In the current climate this is not a poriority. I think a few quid would be better spent on sorting out the horrendouis traffic flow probs near Asda. This puts me off going through Rawtenstall. I dont have time to sit in a traffic jam made be lights which are set completely wrong

Without a direct service on the main 464 route after 8:30pm through to Rochdale, nor Accrington; and only the X43 running Burnley/Manchester - I would wonder WHAT they are going to put in this £3m bus station - especially at nights??

3.2 million!! You are having a laugh. Two things: 1. It probably won't happen and 2. It's hardly London Victoria, what's wrong with just catching a bus? Most people stand on Bank St to go into Manchester anyway. Has anyone actually conducted a survey to see how many people use the existing station? As a bus station that is, not a toilet!
