Rawtenstall hairdresser retires with parting gift

YOUNG Caspar Mulderrig was a cut above the rest when he became veteran hairdresser Tony Winder's last client.

The 10-year-old, who has Down’s Syndrome, has been visiting Antony and Patricia's in Bank Street, Rawtenstall, since he was a toddler.

His dad Paul, who runs his own solicitor's firm, has also been a long-standing client and his grandma Brenda was one of Tony's first clients when he opened the salon in Newchurch Road in 1969.

When Tony heard that Caspar's school was trying to raise funds to send disabled and disadvantaged children on a skiing trip to Switzerland, he stepped in to help.

With his final day at the salon approaching, Tony decided to auction his final haircuts to the highest bidders.

He donated £500 to Caspar's school Tor View in Haslingden.

Tony, a county councillor, said: “I’ve been cutting Caspar’s hair since he was little and he has become one of my most loyal clients so I’m thrilled he was the last person in the chair.”

Paul, who is a Burnley season ticket holder and who named Caspar after Clarets legend Frank Casper, said: “It was a real honour to be associated with Tony's retirement.”

Tony will continue to mange the business side of the salon, but the day to day running has been handed over to manageress Tracy Collinge with Kirsty Nuttall taking on the role of director of training.
