A 31-year-old man and a seven-year-old boy have been taken to hospital after a two-car crash.

The crash happened at the junction of Shofield Road and Henry Street, Rawtenstall, when a Vauxhall Astra van collided with a Vauxhall Insignia. 

The man, who drove the Vauxhall Astra, was trapped following the collision and had to be rescued by fire crews using hydraulic equipment. 

He was taken by land ambulance to Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital with a leg injury.

The child, who was in the van with the man, was also taken by land ambulance to Blackburn hospital with a stomach injury. 

The driver of the Vauxhall Insignia escaped without injury. 

The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours following the collision.

An air ambulance, two senior paramedics and a land ambulance attended the incident, as well as two fire engines and crews from Rawtenstall.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "A man and a child have been taken to Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital by land ambulance.

"The man had a leg injury and the child suffered a stomach injury.

"An air ambulance and two senior paramedics also attended the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: "Two fire engines and crews from Rawtenstall responded to a collision between two cars.

"Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to rescue a man trapped in one of the vehicles." ‬

A police spokesman said: "We attended the crash which happened at the junction of Schofield Road and Henry Street.

"A Vauxhall Astra van collided with a Vauxhall Insignia. 

"The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours following the collision.

"There were some injuries to the driver of the van, a 31-year-old man from Rossendale, while the seven-year-old child in his van also had some injuries.

"The driver of the Vauxhall Insignia suffered no injuries."
