FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in a commercial building at Rawtenstall.

Twenty firefighters and four fire engines were called to a caravan on fire fire and a barn in Bury Road at shortly after 3.20pm on Saturday.

The fire, which started in the static caravan to the rear of RCS Doors, spread to nearby shipping containers and then to a barn.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus, jets and an ultra-high-pressure cold cutting lance to bring the fire under control and remained at the scene for two and a half hours.

Darryl Wood, crew manager of Rawtenstall fire service, said: "The owner of the caravan was burning some old bits of the caravan off next to it, which set fire to the caravan.

"It then spread to some shipping containers alongside and then spread and damaged the outside of a barn as well as some containers used for storage.

"The caravan was totally destroyed by the fire.

"One of the side walls of the barn was damaged as well as the roof which was severely affected.

"There was quite a lot of damage to two containers which were holding old dismantled engine parts."

Three fire engines from Lancashire and one from Manchester attended the incident.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "There was a fire involving an outbuilding at a commercial premises in Rawtenstall, approximately 20m by 10m.

"The building was believed to contain coal and wood and was well alight when firefighters arrived at the scene.

"The fire was extinguished at 5.03pm."
