MASKED raiders are believed to have used explosive gas to blast a cash machine.

Police have launched a manhunt following the raid at the Barclays Bank in Rawtenstall.

Yesterday the scene was taped off by police as they carried out forensic tests.

Scenes of crimes officers could be seen examining the branch in Bank Street and taking samples.

Officers, who were attending an unrelated incident nearby, said they heard an explosion and were at the scene just minutes later. When they arrived they saw three men wearing balaclavas and black jackets running out of the bank.

The men then got into the back of an Audi estate type car, possibly an A3, and made their getaway.

Despite officers attempts to apprehend the men, they made off at speed from Ormerod Street, along Bank Street then in the direction of the M65.

Detectives believe the raiders, who struck at 2.50am yesterday targeted the cash machine using explosive gas then gained entry to the inside of the bank.

Police yesterday said nothing had been stolen in the incident but their investigation was on-going.

Detective Sergeant Zoe Russo of Burnley CID said: “Our investigation still remains in its early stages and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident, or anyone who has any information that could assist our inquiry to get in touch as soon as possible.”
