THERE was a lot of creativity in the air when pupils at a Ramsbottom school were challenged to design kites.

Plenty of great ideas were flying around as pupils used a lot of initiative and imagination to create some colourful and original designs in the competition at Peel Brow Primary School, in Fir Street.

Pupils were asked to design the kites in their out-of-schoo time. One winner was chosen from every class by StJohn Healey, a school governor whose remit covers design and technology.

Foundation class winners received soft balls while elder pupils received mini stunt kites. All entrants received a certificate.

School design and technology co-ordinator Julie Nelson, who organised the competition, said: "I was very pleased with the response. We ended up with 75 entries and the display has filled the hall and the entrance hall.

"It was an optional task but a lot of the children really threw themselves into it because it was a fun and exciting challenge.

"Some got help from parents and some did all the work themselves but the important thing is that it got them thinking about design, about how to make something and about what materials to use.

"Some of the entries were simply coloured plastic bags, but they show that pupils are using their initiative."

The school recently raised £218 for Concern Worldwide's Food Aid campaign.
