FOUR men armed with baseball bats and a sawn-off shotgun burst into a moorland farmhouse near Ramsbottom.

The men, wearing hooded tops, stormed into the house at night and called for the occupier by name, said police. They then attacked him.

His wife heard a disturbance, came downstairs and started screaming, at which point the men fled, said police.

Nothing was stolen.

The man is not thought to have been seriously injured in the incident, which happened off Sales's Lane at 9.15pm on Tuesday.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Rossendale CID on 01706 237440.
