A ROSSENDALE band will fly the valley's flag at a national brass competition being staged in Harrogate later this year.

Musicians from Haslingden and Helmshore Band were placed in the top two at the North West qualifiers in Blackpool on Sunday.

Under the direction of Dave Holland, the hard-working collective, along with Wardle Band from Rochdale, will travel to West Yorkshire in September.

The band performed Three Part Invention, by Kenneth Downie.

Band secretary Chris Faulkner said: "We were determined to go this year and along with our musical director we put in a lot of work - and it paid off!"

Now the band must raise the £5,000 cost of taking players to the national finals.

Committee member Craig McFarland added: "If anyone would like to help out with fundraising events or a donation then it would be very much appreciated."
