AN airline pilot, sacked for allowing Blackburn Rovers star Robbie Savage into his cockpit, has lost an appeal to get his job back.

Captain Pablo Mason was fired by Helmshore-based MyTravel after he allowed the midfielder on to the flight deck to calm his nerves.

The footballer had vowed to help the Gulf war hero with his appeal, but the company's board upheld the dismissal on the grounds that Captain Mason had broken strict anti-terrorism rules.

Captain Mason, who carried out 23 bombing missions over Iraq during the first Gulf War, plans to take his case to an industrial tribunal.

He said: "I was shell-shocked by the decision. It was an utter disappointment. I expected some form of disciplinary sanction and then reinstatement to the job that I love. This is an abject disappointment."

Captain Mason had invited Savage into the Airbus A320s's cockpit on the return private charter flight after Rovers' 1-0 victory over MyPa-47 in Finland in August.

The player has a fear of flying and the captain thought it would be helpful if he could see what was going on at the controls.

But the visit breeched strict regulatory authority policy which bans unauthorised personnel from the flight deck. The rules were brought in following the September 11 attacks.

It is thought someone on the flight reported what had happened, and 57-year-old Captain Mason, from Leamington Spa, Warwick-shire, was sacked from his £90,000-a-year job. Captain Mason has always maintained that his actions did not put those onboard at risk. He said: "Robbie Savage is a charming man. I find it appalling that there has been suggestions his presence in the cockpit created a danger to other passengers."

Staff at Blackburn Rovers wrote to MyTravel to defend Captain Mason's actions and Robbie Savage also offered to speak at his appeal.

Captain Mason added: "The support from Blackburn Rovers has been phenomenal.

"I have a reputation that has been built up through almost 40 years of flying and it has been thrown into the bin by a very corporate corporation."

A MyTravel Airways spokesperson said: "The board which heard Captain Mason's appeal upheld the sanction of dismissal for his offence of allowing an unauthorised person access to the flight deck in contravention of the current DfT security directive.

Ive put all this into a chain email and sent it to pretty much everyone I know. Hopefully the bad publicity will prompt them to re-think their decision. Ridiculous Jobsworths inflated by their own importance. They guy tried to do a good thing and fought for his country. Give him his job back you pathetic excuse for a company.

I think the pilot should rise above it! He knew the rules, he should take the punishment. Yeh it was only robbie savage, but still!!
With the pilots experience he will fly back into work, will a decent airline! (as my travel no longer exists)

I think should lead to a boycott of MyTravel. I have now cancelled a holiday I booked with them 2 weeks ago. It has cost me money to cancel but we have to stand up to these jobsworths.

I heard that Savage has strong links with Al-Quaeda. Apparently there's footage of him whinging at an instructor and waving his arms furiously in an afghan training camp.

The pilot knew the rules! Robbie Savage is a footballer - got absolutely no reason whatsoever to be in the cockpit! Maybe harsh but rules are there for a reason. About time people realised that footballers are not above the regulations and if he is scared of flying the worst possible place for him to be is in the cockpit anyway well done MYTRAVEL

I am sure that if mighty Jack Walker was about he would have have given the pilot a job Flying from HIS home to Blackburn,May be Savage should spend some money and pay him to drive /Fly to games.

My travel has been overtaken by thomas cook. I worked for My Travel for a few years, and I know the company are making many people redundent. I can't help but think the company has used this as an excuse to sack Pablo Mason, as he would have been due a massive payout had he been made redundent. not good for a company on the brink of going bust. Eaither way My Travel is a shambles.

Jano, Manchester says...

It was a clean cut case where he shouldn't have allowed it to happen. Although some leeway should have been allowed. But, just like football, there is no room to allow people some common sense. Everything has to be done by the book, or it's goodnight Vienna. Remember, it's only the people who write the legislation that have brains. If you don't write it, you are seen as thick and stupid people.

On the my travel thing. My Travel Group plc merged with Thomas Cook AG to form the Thomas Cook Group plc. My Travel is now simply a brand name with the holding company being Thomas Cook Group plc. Either way, both companies are terrible.

Pablo Mason will hopefully find employment soon.

I'm inclined to agree with Mike. I recognise the signs of a company who wanted an excuse to get rid of someone.

The reason could be that there were redundancies anyway or maybe his face just didn't fit but no one would've batted an eyelid if he had been given a final written warning on appeal and warned about his future conduct after taking into account his service to MyTravel and to country.

So he gave them the excuse they were looking for and the rest is history. They have done nothing wrong. They made the rules, he broke the rules then he put the ball in their court.

Let's be honest, from the level of intelligence shown in your posts, I'd be extremely suprised if you were in any kind of employment.

My guess is you're just a Burnley fan using the PC on a Jobseekers "Back To Work" course.

Just worry about your sh1t little club HAMISH. Mr Flood seems to be running it into the ground, but to be honest that is where it was and always has been.
