What is needed is the education of children that it is not safe to play on or run out into the road.

Totally agree with retired one's comments. The 20 mph zone around Avenue Parade and Plantation Street in Accrington is largely ignored by drivers, ironically mostly by drivers that live on the streets within the zone and those taking their children to one of the three schools in the area. There are many times that me and my 6 year old daughter have to dodge cars doing more than 30 mph when we're walking between Burnley Road and St Annes and St Joseph's school on Sandy Lane. Until there's better enforcement of the limit in the existing areas and better education for children, it's a total waste of money.

Well said Bridgey and Retired One, in the above posts. 20 MPH limit... so what ? Many of the tosspots in their open top BMW's or Audi 4x4s just don't care about speed.... just look at the number of fatalities reported in the headlines of this journal over the last couple of months. A 20 MPH roadsign is just that. It needs enforcement by real officers who can prosecute drivers ( not a corrupt Speed Camera official who lets his mates off !! )

I never thought I'd say this, but having an 8 year old daughter myself I am glad of the speed reductions. I live on a back street and people drive past at over 40 MPH, some even faster. I just hope they will patrol the new speed limits. This speed reduction will save the lives of many children and that is a fact.
If saving the lives of children is going to cost you 1 or 2 mins journey time, surely, this must be an acceptable cost.

Sorry .....but I'm a pedestrian and as a pedestrian I get to see all sorts of drivers.There are the considerate drivers ie the ones who drive at reasonable speed and having due care and attention to the road and ALL its' users .
And then there's the the folk who regard the road as a race track and their own personal game area,indicators are an optional extra,swerving onto pavements is fine..blocking your view by parking on corners is ok...puddles are there to be used as targets ........and most of all 'let's play scare the pedestrian' by speeding towards you,jumping traffic lights etc.....and generally making life hell.So for me ....have a go at your fellow drivers and I'll have a go at fellow pedestrians.

This is a good idea if used sensibly in housing estates, near parks, etc, where it can save lives.
As a motorist driving around Nelson, Colne and Barrowford regularly, it is my experience that due to traffic levels, traffic lights, crossings, or especially if a drop of rain is falling, traffic is already crawling around at some 10-20 mph in many 30 mph zones.
Do we want it to drop further in such a busy world? Perhaps we should go back to the Red Flag Act of 1865 with a man preceeding each vehicle on foot waving a red flag.
Pedestrians need to take responsibility for themselves and their children as conditions dictate.

Off-topic but whilst on the subject of cars - whose mean idea was it to change the Sunday parking limits near Burnley centre to those of week days.
What was wrong with the existing system - too big a fall in car parking revenues due to people shopping on Sunday to avoid council rip-off?
I don't remember seeing any notification of this change (I may have missed it) but I will be visiting less.
The same crazy thinking is applied to Nelson where I understand there is talk of charging to park. Does the council want to finally kill off what is left of town centre shops? Who wants to come to Nelson and pay for the privilage?

They'd have to pay me an increasing amount of money to come to Belson. That's got to rank as being amongst the most disgraceful eye-sore of a town that exists on this sceptr'd Isle.

The trials were deemed a success where they? I live in one of these so called 20mph zones. I'm yet to notice anyone actually travelling under that speed. We even asked the council to put speed bumps on our road because of people using it a s a cut through and driving at excessive speed. Despite lots of evidence, a petition and even a car that ended up on its roof in the middle of the street because it took the corner too fast (and that was on a Sunday afternoon) - the council's answer was - sorry no money available. I don't see how some metal signs with numbers painted on them that people will just ignore anyway, are a good use of my tax money!

Fair comment John but there is a difference between a teenager crossing the road and playing chicken with moving traffic, compared to what heretical pointed out. The level of driving in this town is pathetic and this cannot be compared to a few halfwitted pedestrians.
