East Lancashire man, 90, left frightened of living at home thanks to burglars

A 90-YEAR-old pensioner has been left too scared to live at his home after burglars tricked him before stealing cash.

A court heard Larry Lee, 19, distracted the vulnerable victim while his older accomplice went upstairs and helped himself to £200 from the victim's wallet.

The Helshore pensioner, who had withdrawn the money to buy friends and family a drink to celebrate his birthday, was unable to go back to his home of 40 years after the ordeal.

Lee, said to be illiterate, admitted the burglary last July and was sent to detention for 12 months.

His accomplice has not yet been caught by police.

Sentencing Lee, of Exchange Street, Accrington, Judge Jonathan Gibson told him there was a great deal of public concern about the elderly being subject to deceptions in their own houses.

The judge said he accepted Lee was not the prime mover.

But he said: "You played a full part knowing what was going on.

"You are plainly someone of limited intelligence who is easily led, you pose a risk of suicide in custody and are likely to find a custodial sentence difficult to serve."

Sarah Statham, prosecuting, said the victim had managed to live alone with some help from his family.

His home was targeted as it had white handrails outside the front door.

He was still in his pyjamas and having his breakfast when he saw two men coming up the garden path.

His daughter had told him not to let any strangers in the house, but one of the duo put his foot in the door.

Lee then kept the victim downstairs whilst the other man went upstairs.

The prosecutor said: "It had been the victim's 90th birthday four days before and he had withdrawn the cash as he was going to have a party that weekend and wanted to buy everybody a drink."

The hearing was told the victim had previously been targeted by bogus workmen.

Last December he had a fall and, after a hospital stay, was unable to go home as he was frightened other people would pick on him.

Joanna Rodikis, for Lee, said the offence was mean and the defendant was the first to accept that.

The barrister said Lee had had problems with drink and cannabis and had tried to take his life on one occasion.

'The barrister said Lee had had problems with drink and cannabis and had tried to take his life on one occasion.'

What a shame the little piece of **** didn't succeed. The time is over for feeling 'sorry' for these pieces of **** and the time is now here to rid our society of these people.

At least LET is reporting what happens to the victim on this occassion, how they are left feeling for the rest of their lives.

The piece of **** who caused this won't. I will not apologize for the language, either, because a piece of **** is what this swiss cheesed piece of human scum is! Along with the rest of them we read about every **** day.

Drugs didn't make them do it - they DID it to THEMSELVES! FFS there are people in this world who have **** all and do NOT take drugs! It takes a certain kind of person to take them: and shows a lack of cowardice all around because they simply cannot face the world so they take drugs, like the cowards they are to 'take all that away'.

The next person who says we should show more sympathy for these drug addicted scum in society I hope one comes to your home, into your home and does what they've done to this vulnerable person who did nothing to attract this scum into their homes but were an easy mark for the cowardly little piece of **** I hope they do the same to you! Because it's only then that the do-gooders of this world will KNOW how others feel in society reading about this crap day in day out.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Totally agree with Davidoff.

I had an elderly relative who was robbed 4 times in a similar manner by his 'neighbours'.

It's no good saying to older people don't open the door because it's not in their nature to ignore someone knocking.

This kind of filth have absolutely no morals, ethics or concern for anyone but themselves and we would all be better off without them.

it seems to me by reading this story and others elsewhere that if you commit a crime and have any form of pityful excuse you can get off crimes nowadays, what a joke the justice system in this country is,makes me sick, the poor old man has the sentence not the **** who commited this crime, the whole set-up is a farce. if it was my elderly relative he had robbed i would dish up my own form of punishment, and it would be more than a slap on the wrist
