LITTLE impact was made on the Conservative vote in Helmshore as the party comfortably held the area’s seat on Rossendale Council.

Tory candidate Tony Haworth polled 771 votes in a by-election prompted by Amanda Milling’s resignation to fight for the Cannock Chase parliamentary constituency.

Labour’s Emma Harding received 444 votes and the UK Independence Party just 364, increasing the Conservative majority from 321 to 327.

The turnout dropped from 43.6 per cent to 33.52 per cent, when the Helmshore seat was last contested in May 2011, between Milling and Labour’s John McManus.

Another by-election is in the offing after Coun Liz McInnes, who represented the Longholme ward in Rawtenstall for Labour, secured the Heywood and Middleton parliamentary seat in a by-election last week.
