A CARING woman who has spent thousands of pounds to help street children in Uganda has launched a fundraising foundation to continue the vital work in the future.

Christine Bulling, 49, who ran a barber shop in Helmshore from 2004, hopes to achieve charity status for the Monic Foundation, which she set up in January.

Through its fundraising and child sponsorship, it supports the work of the Monic Children’s Centre in Jinja, Uganda.

The centre, located in a rented building, provides a much-needed home and other assistance for around 20 youngsters.

On Sunday, August 18 between 10am and 3pm, a cutting hair for charity event in aid of the Monic Foundation will be held at McGuirk’s male grooming salon in Walmerlsey Road, Bury. The event includes hot towel shaves, a bake sale and raffle.

She said: “Many of the children we support have grown up in appalling poverty on the streets and have been abandoned by their families.

“Some suffer from addiction problems, due to substance abuse, and have also suffered physical and sexual abuse. Every day of their young lives is a struggle for survival.”

During the past year, Ms Bulling has spent £400 a month from her own savings to help the youngsters.

Ms Bulling told of her aims.

She said: “Our aim is to purchase land in Jinja, and build a permanent school and orphanage to support street children.”

The Foundation is planning a Hadrian’s Wall coast to coast walk between September 8 and 12 and fundraisers are being sought for the event.
