Rossendale and Darwen MP's campaign to revive the Wombles
CLASSIC: Great Uncle Bulgaria and the gang are being backed by MPs
CLASSIC: Great Uncle Bulgaria and the gang are being backed by MPs

AN MP has launched a campaign to restore shows like The Wombles to our television screens in a bid to improve children's education.

More than 100 backbench MPs from across the political spectrum have backed Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson's crusade for more homegrown children's television.

TV campaigners say that since the days of The Wombles, Bagpuss and Noddy, the numbers of British manufactured programmes for youngsters have dipped alarmingly.

They say that the schedules are filled with US cartoon serials and badly-dubbed jerky Japanese animations, a point taken up in an Early Day Motion presented to Parliament by Mrs Anderson.

And she believe that public service television for children plays a hugely important role in contributing to the educational and cultural development of children.

She said: "I am very concerned about at the lack of home grown material for children, there should be more productions in this country.

"I think it is important to keep creating children's programmes in Britain.

"I thought Teletubbies was a great children's programme, they were attractive characters it was interesting, creative and they were really entertaining.

"Another programme I think is worth reviving is the Magic Roundabout.

"The lack of home grown material also raises a serious issue about jobs and it is important to keep them in this country.

"That was also one of the reasons for the early day motion. "

In a spoof cartoon clip, independent producers group PACT (the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television) have remade the Wombles as if they were an 'American gangsta' posse.

Instead of a touching concern for the state of Wimbledon Common, Great Uncle Bulgaria, Orinoco and Tobermory come out with expressions like 'awesome, man' and 'gimme a break'.

The sequence ends with Tomsk asking his fellow Wombles about 'what's going down in the hood?'.

Original TV series narrator Bernard Cribbins, in a voiceover, then urges the Government's Wombles' to ensure more British-made programmes are commissioned - before it's too late.

The motion put forward by Mrs Anderson, a former film minister, praises the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee and regulator Ofcom for recogising the threat to children's public sector broadcasting.

It ends by saying that MPS should call "on the Government to ensure that UK children of all ages, races and faiths have a genuine choice of high quality, UK-made children's programmes that reflect the diversity of UK culture and children's lives and are available on a choice of channels."

So far the motion has been signed by a range of MPs, from Lancashire Labour colleague and Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle, and ex-thespian Glenda Jackson, to Tories Peter Bottomley and Ann Winterton, and the Liberal Democrats' Chris Huhne and Susan Kramer.

One of the few homegrown children's TV programmes, talent show The Slammer, is hosted by Radio Lancashire breakfast DJ Ted Robbins, who lives in Rossendale.

Ah, so that's why she didn't have the time and effort or indeed the inclination to object to the closure of Sunnyhurst PO. It won't be forgotten come the next election.

You don't need to watch TV for children's programmes you only need to listen to our MP's in Parliament "Teletubbies, Wombles and Clangers" I would say that Mrs J Anderson MP will need to look after her seat or she might lose it at the next Election.

If Janet Anderson wants to improve childrens' education, why does she not fight for a decent education system like we were promised in 1997 and re-introduce discipline back into the school system Remember "education, education
,education", Janet? You and your party are a complete waste of space.

There is no chance of her getting anything changed, she cant even get all of Rossendale in the same Post code area.
She is a much use as a Choc. firegard.
The only thing she knows how to do is to claim her expenses, and by god is she good at that.

I just do not believe it!, I have just noticed while reading this most important of all most important articals and may i say for the 3rd time, that most sacred of all sacred words has been used no less, I repeat no less than two times, I repeat two times. What is this word i hear you all asking, let me tell you..."CHOICE". The last time i heard that word used by a minister was the last edition of the politics show, When HARRIET HARMAN declared that POLITICS was all about CHOICE. There all on another planet.

Is this what you voted your MP in to power for?
Never mind about Drugs, poverty, Housing, street violence, National Health Problems, lack of policemen bla bla bla bla.
Lets get back the wombles who can do what all of our teaching establishment cant do and that is fix the education system in this country.

What sort of medication is this woman on!

You voted her in, what does that say.

If this is all Janet Anderson is worried about, she leads a very sheltered life. Is she worried about our police station opening part-time, the closure of the post offices, the appalling state of Darwen's secondary schools, the disgraceful waste of money that is the new one way system, the death of Darwen town centre, the loss of manufacturing businesses and jobs in the town, the fact that 1 in 5 families live on benefits, the fact that local life expectancy is lower than in the south of England, that fuel bills and government tax take is crippling working people, that food prices are rising as fast as her expenses claims..... What a joke - if you voted her in you should be ashamed.

Janet – I had not intended to vote for you at the next General Election, now I know how wise my decision is.

You Janet are living in a dream world, but that’s probably because you are currently driving to the moon and back and have then to go to Wimbledon Common to feed your pet Wombles and then to Knotty Ash to tickle the diddy men. Now I know why your car mileage expense are as they are, it must be a terrible strain and obviously it is having its effect. You really do need a few years leave of absence, in fact in 2010 possibly we can hopefully arrange for your retirement. They tell me there are many retirement homes for former unrealistic dreamers on the Gulag Archipelago – all applications to Putin Holiday Homes.

Get real Janet there are families in your constituency whose total wages are less than your mileage expenses – which we accept are only reimbursement of course – but there are some doubting Littlejohns who have to be convinced.

Does this not just go to show how up to date our fantastic MP is. Check out Nick jr and you will find that the Magic Roundabout is back on. Time for Mrs Anderson to get out of LA LA land and maybe do what she is supposed to do. Mind you the whole political party live in cloud cuckoo land.
