A WOMAN and her nine-year-old grandson managed to escape a severe fire at their home in Southview, Haslingden, yesterday.

The fire, which destroyed one upstairs bedroom and smokelogged the rest of the terrace property started at about 6.20pm.

Fire crews from Haslingden and Rawtenstall attended the blaze.

Crew Manager Glenn Barrett from Rawtenstall Fire Station said: "When we arrived we could see plumes of black smoke billowing out of the front and back bedroom windows.

"The woman and her grandson were out by the time we arrived and pretty shaken up.

"The front bedroom is destroyed and the rest of the first floor is badly damaged by smoke.

"The downstairs living room has been damaged by water used to put the flames out."

The two neighbouring properties were checked for fire and declared safe.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
