A KNIFEMAN found to have four weapons on him in a Haslingden street has been spared immediate jail.

Burnley magistrates heard Kyle Andrew Cook, 19, was arrested after a person flagged down police.

Officers found three knives in his trousers and when Cook was taken to the police station, they found another up his sleeve.

Cook, who had previous convictions for drugs and racially-aggravated public order offences, admitted possessing an article with a sharp pointed blade on Warner Street.

He was given 120 days in jail, suspended for 18 months, with the Think First programme. He must also pay £50 costs.

The bench told the defendant, of Blackburn Road, Haslingden, they did not know if he understood how close he came to jail.

Robin Phoenix, defending, said Cook had an inability to reason at some points.

Only 4 knives and a long string of drug and violence ofences. So naturally he won't get sent down or fined heavily. Unlike the monster in Pendle who left his cat behind when he moved and got fined £1000. Good to see our justice system has it's priorities right.

That's not just "a Haslingden street", that's slap bang in the middle of the town centre. Frightening. And I wonder, is the 'Think First' programme designed to increase his ability to "reason at some points"?

Government policy is you have to have 6 knives and an automatic weapon before jail is an option.

Well said Matt.

The decent, law abiding, tax-paying, honest, respectful citizens of this country are being utterly shafted by a Government that has allowed political correctness and human rights to get in the way of common sense.

Last one out turn the lights off.

This story encapsulates all that is wrong in this country in seven short paragraphs. He was carrying four knives, he has previous convictions for drugs and racially aggravated public order offences and he gets a suspended sentence and a 50 pound fine that he wont probably pay back because the taxpayer will foot the bill. And Robin Phoenix how could you keep a straight face "inability to reason at some points!". You could not make it up. The Magistrates should hang their heads for failing the general public again in their duties. Shame on you. Shame on our country and when the defendant is up for murder in the next couple of years will you pop round to the victims family and explain how you were 'so close to sending him to jail'. Idiots.
