THE decision to invest £5.6million in new and improved leisure facilities in Rossendale has been hailed as the biggest single investment the council has made in 36 years.

The investment will see a new swimming pool at Haslingden Sports Centre and more than £2million spent at Marl Pits to improve the pool, widen the range of facilities and make it more sustainable.

Marl Pits will also gain four new 5-a-side football pitches and a fitness suite with 45 stations.

The decision follows a 12 month leisure review by independent leisure consultants KKP.

Rossendale Council’s leisure portfolio holder, Coun Jason Gledhill, said: “I am delighted that the £5.6million of investment in leisure has been agreed.

“This will help to create some fantastic leisure facilities in the borough that are fit for the 21st Century.

“The health and wellbeing of local people is one of the council’s top priorities and by investing in high quality leisure facilities we will provide great opportunities for local people to get fit.”

The decision was passed by the full council.
