£5.6m ‘spend’ on Rossendale leisure facilities celebrated

THE decision to invest £5.6million in new and improved leisure facilities in Rossendale has been hailed as the biggest single investment the council has made in 36 years.

The investment will see a new swimming pool at Haslingden Sports Centre and more than £2million spent at Marl Pits to improve the pool, widen the range of facilities and make it more sustainable.

Marl Pits will also gain four new 5-a-side football pitches and a fitness suite with 45 stations.

The decision follows a 12 month leisure review by independent leisure consultants KKP.

Rossendale Council’s leisure portfolio holder, Coun Jason Gledhill, said: “I am delighted that the £5.6million of investment in leisure has been agreed.

“This will help to create some fantastic leisure facilities in the borough that are fit for the 21st Century.

“The health and wellbeing of local people is one of the council’s top priorities and by investing in high quality leisure facilities we will provide great opportunities for local people to get fit.”

The decision was passed by the full council.

What about Bacup yet agian we are being left out. The leisure hall needs saving we have no leisure faclities in Bacup at all. The council should be ashamed how it treats Bacup peolpe who vote the Bacup coincillors into office. Edith Lord

Why don’t you get in touch with your MP, Janet Anderson. Get her to put it on her expenses!

It's great news, I'll be using the facilities at Marl Pits.

No doubt we'll get Cllr Alyson Barnes knocking it, she has a knack of making good news sound bad whilst giving no useful ideas of her own.

Beckyno1, above, the Freepress report said Bacup were going to get some money aswell. That's better than when the Labour Party shut the pool there and gave nothing back to Bacup at all.

Or you could ask Joke Berry if Lord Ashcroft could slip him a few more quid from the £127million in taxes he's managed to "avoid".

Shepherdess, Rossendale above: Sorry, can you make your comment a little bit clearer. Who’s Joke Berry & Lord Ashcroft & please tell us about the avoided taxes?

Surely, Janet is the best person to ask about these sort of things isn't she?

Anyone heard of Whitworth. Theres a pool there but this hideous council seem to have missed it out when bragging about how wonderfull the leisure facilities planned for Rossendale will be. Where is the money to upgrade the Leisure Centre in Whitworth? Oh dear you seem to have forgotten. Just to remind you, Whitworth is that strange place that you may have heard of beyond Bacup. You know that place where you don't spend any money to speak of even though you take council tax from it's residents! Good though really because you get money from there so you can spend it elsewhere in Rossedale. Must feel very rewarding, except if you live there.
