Haslingden headteacher calls for pedestrian crossing

THE headteacher of a Rossendale primary school has been supported by his MP in a bid to slow down a “dangerous” road.

Paul Stanley is urging Lancashire County Council to put children’s safety first by installing a pedestrian crossing near the Woolpack Hotel roundabout in Haslingden.

He said parents were opting to drive to Broadway Primary School after families blacklisted the popular commuter route as an unsafe option.

Mr Stanley wrote to Rossendale MP Janet Anderson asking for support in reducing the speed limit on the road.

He said: “As headteacher at Broadway Primary School I have implemented a School Travel Plan to encourage as many children as possible to walk to school.

“The problem we have is that a large number of our parents consider the journey to school, from the Tesco area of Haslingden down to Haslingden Broadway, to be too dangerous, and I have to say that I agree with them.

“The Woolpack Hotel roundabout which feeds traffic to a slip road down to the busy A56 Haslingden bypass concerns us most.

“Cars speed down from the roundabout trying to build up speed before they enter the bypass and many of my families have to cross this slip road.

“I feel very strongly that we should not wait for one of our young people to be killed before the council takes action.”

Mrs Anderson will meet with the school next month to see the issue first hand.

She said: “There are three schools near that area including Haslingden High and Tor View, so that whole road needs to be looked at.

“The county council needs to look at the problem because it is a dangerous blackspot especially for young children who use it.”

Couldn't agree more - it's always been the same, since the bypass was built. There's a lollypop lady on duty every morning and afternoon, so that should help things. I think a crossing will cause traffic chaos - possibly not the right thing to do in this case.

I would hope that Janet Anderson will work with Lancashire County Council to find the most appropriate solution to this problem, rather than dismiss it as their problem, not hers, as this statement implies.
This is a serious issue, for which the best solution may not be a pedestrian crossing, and it needs both sides (LCC & MP) to work together.
