Burnley park murderers jailed for life

TWO men who carried out the 'cold-blooded' and 'wicked' murder of a vulnerable teenager in a Burnley park have been jailed for life.

The adoptive parents of victim, 19-year-old Louise Evans have welcomed the sentences handed down to callous Anthony Wood and his accomplice Matthew Maw.

Judge Anthony Russell QC told Wood: "For no remotely understandable reason you Anthony Wood decided that Louise should be killed, and it seems you persuaded Matthew Maw to do your dirty work for you.

"It was a cold-blooded and callous offence on your part for which you have shown no remorse whatsoever.

"The only word that even begins to describe your conduct is wicked."

Louse's adoptive parents Loraine and Jeff Evans, of Colne, said they hoped lessons would be learnt by the various social and caring services involved in Louise's care to prevent similar tragedies.

The couple, who adopted Louise when she was a baby, had raised concerns over how Louise, who had Asperger's Syndrome and was partly in the care of social services at the time of her death, was allowed to live independently in Elizabeth Street Project hostel, in Burnley.

She had been lured to a secluded spot behind Towneley Hall last July by Wood and Maw, with whom she had become friends, after meeting them at the hostel where the three were residents, around two weeks earlier.

Louise, a former Haslignden High pupil, died after being repeatedly stabbed with a knife and beaten with a large piece of wood. She was stabbed so severely that the blade snapped off and became embedded in her chest.

Wood, 21, was told he will serve a minimum of 23 years for planning and encouraging the 'brutal' murder and Maw, 19, who was recruited by Wood to carry out the attack, will serve at least 18 years.

Speaking after the sentencing at Preston Crown Court yesterday, Loraine and Jeff Evans joined police officers in welcoming the 'significant' sentences handed to the killers.

Mr Evans said: "We would like to pay tribute to the police, CPS and barristers for the simply tremendous work they have done.

"It may seem like a simple case in that there was no lengthy chase to find the perpetrators, but it was extremely complicated to bring them to justice and they have done an outstanding job. The support they have given us has been fantastic from the first day."

The court heard how the three were part of a group that had gone to the park to stay out for the night on July 20 along with other residents at the hostel.

Wood, who had argued with Louise, took a knife with the intention of killing her and later passed it to Maw to carry out the fatal attack, the court was told.

Dennis Watson, for Maw, told the hearing how the 19-year-old had endured a lifetime of bullying because of his 'unusual' appearance caused by a cleft palate.

He said Maw, who operated at a 'lower intellectual level' than the average person, was easily influenced.

And he had been subjected to verbal abuse by members of the group on the night of the attack, he said.

Wood denied any involvement in the attack, but was found guilty by a jury, following a two-week trial at Preston Crown Court last month.

Maw, who was on licence at the time of the attack for possession of a knife in Blackburn, had already admitted killing Lousie, who was a former Accrington and Rossendale College student.

Judge Russell said: "It is clear that you Matthew Maw inflicted most if not all of the physical violence, but at the instigation of and with the full encouragement of you Anthony Wood."

After the case, Detective Insp Paul Broxson, of Lancashire Police, said: "It was the worst assault I have seen in 23 years of service.

"Wood is a calculated individual who planned and carried out the attack, using Maw to do his dirty work in the hope of absolving himself of any responsibility."

Gordon Birtwistle, Burnley Council Leader, called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lousie's placement.

He said: "Social Services should take every step to ensure the care being given to those people keeps them safe and sound and helps them through the years when they need it. If that did not happen social services need to investigate why it did not happen to ensure it does not happen again."

Louise Taylor, director for specialist and direct delivery services, did not comment on the call for lessons to be learned. She said: "Everyone who knew and supported Louise is deeply upset by the circumstances surrounding her death."

Benet Middleton, National Asperger's Syndrome spokesperson, said people with Asperger's syndrome were encouraged to live independently if they expressed a desire to do so.

However, they should always be provided with an appropriate amount of care, she said.

He said: "People with autism should have the same rights as the rest of society to live free from fear and with the protection and support they need."

Louise's life

LOUISE Evans was ‘a lively and independent’ personality who struggled to fit in easily.

She lived in Colne with her adoptive parents, Loraine and Jeff, and attended Park High School until she was 14.

Louise moved to Rossendale to live with a foster family and joined Haslingden High School.

More than four years later she moved to the Elizabeth Street Project hostel, in Burnley.

She had previously spent time living at the Salvation Army in Blackburn.

Louise had just finished a course in childcare at Accrington and Rossendale College when she died.

Reading from an impact statement written by her adoptive parents, Judge Anthony Russel QC said: “She was lively and independent personality who perhaps did not fit in easily.

"Her parents describe her as something of a complex and bewildering brew – feisty, strange, beautiful, vulnerable, brave – she worked hard at school and very much wanted her independence.”

After her death, more than 2,000 friends and family members joined a tribute page on Facebook.

At her funeral last year a number of mourners chose to wear something pink – the teenager’s favourite colour.

No, Midas would (probably) not say the same thing if it were a close relative killed. But it wasn't, was it. Anyone in that situation would demand the most serious punishment and that's why we don't let the bereaved use their emotions to sentence people. That's only sensible but hysterical posts like yours do nothing to further the debate.

The fact is, they will serve life sentences regardless of what the hang 'em and flog 'em brigade demand.

It's reckoned that the very fittest, most mentally astute people in society could just about cope with ten years in prison. Anything over that destroys most folk so these two vermin may not survive to come out. If they do, they will be so physically and mentally damaged, they will probably feel life isn't worth living and few people will shed a tear for them if they chose not to go on.

Even if they do come out the other side, they will be under licence for the rest of their lives and subject to massive scrutiny from the authorities. They will have no privacy or real freedom for what's left of their pathetic lives and will be subject to being whisked back to jail for the most trivial offences.

No, to me, the sentence is appropriate.

There speaks someone who's clearly never been in a prison. Butlins! You haven't got a clue, pal. As part of my job, I have to visit prisons regularly and I can say with no fear of contradiction that this ridiculous Daily Mail view of them being easy, holiday-camp like palaces of fun is so far wide of the mark as be a fairy story. They are cruel, brutal, dirty, dehumanising hell-holes that no-one in their right minds would ever want to spend time locked up in.

What people like you conveniently ignore is that every year innocent people are murdered by convicted murderers who have been released from jail, after serving their "life" sentences. Worry about these innocent people for a change. Anyway the advances made in forensic technology make it extremely unlikely that an innocent would now be executed.
Please don't endanger our lives for the sake of your sensibilities, thank you.

I'm far from 'sticking up for these types'. I think they are vermin and the life they will be leading from now on will be worse than anything you can possibly imagine. And they do not have 'ease of access to phones, drugs, TV's (sic), playstations (sic)' at all. I have never seen a Playstation inside the type of prison these two will be spending the rest of their natural lives in. Having a phone risks putting years onto your sentence and any drugs inside are rough enough and rare enough to kill or maim anyone stupid enough to consider taking them.

Still, you'd know best, being the expert, like.

There's people in chokey for not paying TV licences or for daring to challenge unfair laws. There's a woman who was sentenced to 9 years the other day for an act of supreme love in ending the desperately sad life of her son who'd gone into a PVS after a car crash. Should these people be subjected to your harsh prison life?

Well I don't need to come out with any proposals since I am in favour of maintaining the status quo, i.e, that we should retain our civilised stance and not execute people. The onus is on you to prove your case that capital punishment should be re-introduced and so far, no-one on here has made anything that approaches a case in favour of doing so. Yes, there's lots of bitterness and impotent demands for revenge but so far, no-one would take any of these views seriously. You may as well accept the fact that you will not see capital punishment introduced in Britain in your lifetimes and almost certainly not in the lifetimes of your children and grandchildren also.

If you can't accept that fact, then either move to a society that is prepared to tolerate your demand for vengeance or take out your anger on the wind. Your choice.

I'm not sitting on any fence; I've never worn sandals (I have no idea what the 'sandles' you refer to are); if you ever met me, you would most certainly not call me passive at all; I am in no way liberal or even Liberal bending and I have never drank herbal tea of any sort in my entire life. Lastly, I am not and never have been a do-gooder. I think the two killers are verminous scum and hope there is a special place in hell reserved for them.

I do however know a great deal more about prison than you and know that their sentences are appropriate. You have yet to tell us why they aren't.

They may be 'released' from prison (if they survive - not many of their age do from that length of sentence) but they'll be on licence for the rest of their miserable lives. If they do survive, they'll come out seriously damaged goods.

they will get to enjoy many things their unfortunate victim will never see. I would be content with real life terms including hard labour. 18 years is nothing they have it easy

I dont beleive that for a second! THey get everything they can ever want in prison, they will come out the same as they went in.... ANIMALS! Dangerous animals who kill are put to sleep, this is what should be done to them!

You are totally wrong. 'They get everything they can ever want in prison' do they? Care to tell us more? And try and do it without recourse to hysterical Daily Mail-type lies, please.

Fear not Rubbish, Bacon's a tube. Pretends he's clever but he's not judging by the prepubescent outbursts he makes, and has the temerity to question others' intelligence when he gets ruffled...Bacon claims he has a lot of know how on the 'inside' of our not so beloved prison system...personally I think the guys a dilussional clown at odds with reality but hey if thats the layman ambassador for weak sentencing then so be it...l

There's a clever lad. Lose the argument, resort to insults.

Now I asked you a question in response to lies you wrote about prisoners getting 'everything they want in prison' and when you can summon up a coherent response, you know, with facts and stuff like that, then we can discuss things properly. Since I don't believe you can, then you have only your bitter prejudice and Daily Mail-inspired vitriol to go on.

But I'm willing to read what you have to say. If it's only puerile insults, then really, don't bother.

18 years of playstations, TV, drugs when available, all mod-cons, free training and early release, not a bad price for butchering some poor young woman repeatedly with a knife..those 2 evil thugs will be laughing at this sentence....I'd also like to see the people overseeing these scallys from social services spending time inside..It would be nice to know what their previous was and the justification for putting them in the accommodation described..

Where did you get that guff from? You've clearly never been anywhere near a prison if you think that. For your information, the prisons these two vermin will serve time in do not have playstations at all and certainly no TV in their cells. Some low-cat prisons may offer them but it will be a long, long time before they will see anything resembling entertainment. All they are down for is a tragedy with few interludes.

If I were you, I'd be glad they had access to drugs. They are cut so badly, they risk their lives every time they take them. If they test positive, time is added on to their sentence so they stay in longer (which should please everyone, no?)

They can't get 'early release' as you put it since their tariff has been set. Even on release (and they may well not make it - they don't look the sharpest tools in the box, do they) then they will be under licence and subject to being whipped back inside at the drop of a hat.

No, take comfort in the fact that they will be going through the most brutal, frightening, demeaning, inhuman time it's possible to go through. And they have a long time to get used to it.

But since you think it's Butlins in there, what's your solution?
