AN elderly woman was treated for smoke inhalation after her kitchen caught fire.

Firefighters attended a kitchen fire involving a plastic container at a property on York Avenue, Haslingden on Sunday just after 1pm.

A woman in her 80s was cooking some food which overheated. She went to put it in the sink when it lit, fire crews said.

After the water was poured out of the pan, smoke came off the pan and spread around the kitchen, a fire spokesman said.

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used a ventilation unit to clear the smoke.

A fire spokesman added: "Most of the damage was done to the pan and plastic container.

"There was a quite a bit of smoke in the kitchen which she inhaled.

"The smoke alarms were fully operated and did give warning to the single occupier."

Paramedics from North West Ambulance Service arrived to tend to the homeowner, who was being treated for for smoke inhalation.
