A MAN has been left with 'critical injuries' after a serious crash.

Police said a 33-year-old man suffered serious head and spinal injuries after a Nissan Almera lost control and hit a stone wall in Blackburn Road, Haslingden at 6.35am yesterday.

The Nissan Almera was travelling along Blackburn Road from Accrington towards Rawtenstall.

Firefighters said the man was trapped and had to be cut out of the car.

The driver was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The road was closed for three hours while officers investigated the incident.

Sgt Malcolm Bell said: "This collision has left a man with critical injuries and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding collision is underway.

"We would urge anyone who was in the area and witnessed the collision to contact us."

A fire service spokesman said: "Two fire engines from Haslingden and Rawtenstall attended a road traffic collision involving one vehicle.

"When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found one person trapped in the vehicle and they used cutting equipment, small tools and a hose reel to safely remove the casualty from the vehicle.

"The casualty was then handed over to paramedics who then took the person to hospital."
