A PLUMBER has been fined after his safety failing led to an explosion at a house.

Burnley magistrates heard how, in May 2014, Lee Barrett failed to provide appropriate safety devices when removing a water tank for a loft conversion in Cambrian Way, Haslingden.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said Barrett, of Mercer Crescent, Haslingden, who is self-employed, had, effectively created a closed water system combined with an old immersion heater, which allowed water to heat to 100ºC.

The spokesman added: “Catastrophic damage was caused to the property. The property had to be significantly demolished and rebuilt.”

Barrett pleaded guilty to Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was fined £500 with £933 costs.
