A UNIVERSITY graduate from Haslingden killed herself after suffering repeated bouts of jealousy and low self-esteem.

Rachel Gow, who had also struggled to come to terms with the death of her mother from cancer, felt she “wasn’t where she should be in life” as she approached the age of 30, an inquest heard.

Burnley Coroner’s Court heard she gassed herself at home in Yarmouth Avenue on November 1 and now her family have pleaded for other young people to seek help when they are suffering from an acute mental health crisis.

Rachel, who studied history at Lancaster University, had previously seen a psychiatrist about her problems but ended the sessions in September last year, the East Lancashire Coroner heard.

Family members cited a number of reasons for her depression over several years, including the divorce of her parents, and then her mum Martha’s death from cancer in 2011.

The 29-year-old former Haslingden High School pupil also had three broken relationships before meeting her boyfriend Anton Tsarev, who moved into her family home in 2013, after which she became constantly scared he would leave her, the inquest heard.

Rachel, who most recently worked as an NHS clerk in Bolton, was also concerned that she had underachieved in life, Mr Tsarev told the coroner, in terms of her career and having children, and felt like her siblings were “doing better”.

On the day she died, Mr Tsarev had received a text message from “a girl she had been jealous of previously”, and although he tried to reassured her, she locked herself in her room, he told the inquest.

He left the house and later received a text message from her “wishing me all the best”, after which he returned home to find Rachel lying on the floor.

Coroner Richard Taylor found she took her own life.

He said: “She was a girl who was very severely troubled by a number of aspects of her life.”

Sarah Davidson, Rachel’s sister, said afterwards: “If anyone is having difficulties then I’d just like to ask them to please ask for help from someone such as their friends and family or the Samaritans.”
