Edenfield hosts Gardeners' Question Time

SLUG pellets and spots on potatoes were among the topics being tackled by experts when the BBC visited Edenfield.

More than 100 gardening enthusiasts packed into Edenfield Parish Church on Monday for a recording of the Radio Four programme Gardeners' Question Time.

The session was hosted by members and guests of the Edenfield and District Horticultural Society who put their questions to an expert panel.

The team was made up of the show’s presenters Eric Robson, chairman of the panel, Pippa Greenwood, Matt Briggs and Christine Walkden.

Questions ranged from how to tackle slugs and prevent spots on potatoes to tips for growing the perfect sunflower.

The Edenfield Parish Church flower show is being held in September and local schools will be getting involved by growing sunflowers.

Lynne Longworth, society secretary, said: “It was an enjoyable evening and we had a good laugh. We heard there was a big waiting list so we applied in 2007/08 hoping that we would be able to host the show in our centenary year in 2014.

“So it came like a bolt out of the blue when they phoned in February to say they wanted to come four years early. We weren’t really prepared so we have had a bit of a rush around.”

Ramsbottom’s amateur champion flower-grower Tony Bracegirdle was also interviewed by the panel on rose growing. Cllr Anne Cheetham, president of society, gave a vote of thanks at the end of the evening.

The programme will be broadcast on Friday, March 12 at 2pm and repeated on Mothering Sunday March 14 at 3pm.
