A FIVE-car collision saw a motorway closed for the second time in two days.

The crash on the M66 just before 8am yesterday happened one day after another accident on the same section of road.

None of the five drivers or any passengers were harmed in the incident, but closed lanes saw severe delays as far as the A56 at Edenfield throughout rush hour.

While debris was cleared and vehicles recovered, traffic queued following the incident on the southbound carriageway near Junction 2 yesterday morning.

It was a second day of traffic misery for commuters who had seen delays throughout most of Monday when an overturned lorry caused chaos at Junction 1.

The 6.30am incident meant lane two of the southbound carriageway were closed until 3.25pm and the two-lane northbound carriageway closed until 4.25pm.

But a spokesman for the Highways Agency said one of the lanes was cleared within half an hour of yesterday’s incident.

He said: “There were no injuries involved in the five-car collision but three of the cars were severely damaged.

“One of the lanes was cleared by 8.30am.

“Highways Agency officers dealt with the recovery of vehicles and the second lane was opened by 10am.”
