A SERIES of events are being planned to launch Rossendale's 'Adrenaline Gateway'.

Five miles of mountain bike trails are being developed at Lee Quarry in Bacup as part of a £300,000 scheme.

Trials riding involves very slow, controlled riding and is considered a specialist strand of mountain biking.

Hyndburn business Terra Firma has been appointed to construct the trails and a 'top designer' Daffyd Davis has been brought in.

Trails will be created for experts and beginners. Competitions will also be able to be held.

In July, when the scheme is expected to be complete, a number of events will be staged under the banner 'Adrenaline Live!'.

Organisers say it will provide an opportunity to test the facilities as well as the management of the scheme.

It will see competitions, demonstrations, instruction and music.

On Saturday 12 July Ski Rossendale will host snowboard and ski competitions within the fun park using purpose built features.

Product demonstrations are also planned and the day will finish with live bands and a party.

on Sunday 13 July Action will shift to Lee Quarry and the new mountain bike trails.

A round of the British Mountain Bike Trials Championship will be held in the new trials area while a cross country race will test out the new trails.

Manufacturers will be there to demonstrate new products and there will be an opportunity for visitors to test ride.

A spokesman said: "Cycling has a huge part to play in the realisation of our goal to reinvent Pennine Lancashire as the most exciting and accessible destination for the pursuit of outdoor lifestyle sports."

Funding for the scheme has come from a variety of places including the Government and local councils.

What about the rare plants and ground-nesting birds we always hear so much about? Maybe a motorcross track could be encorporated? Stop people riding on areas where it is illegal and prevent the confiscation of their bikes? Oh thats right... it makes too much sense.

but surely if you can afford a mx bixe you can afford the suv and bike rack to take it to an already exitsting mx track - you wouldnt dream of riding an unregistered mx bike on the road without insurance (and tax) would you. Now if you mean enduro bike riders and 4x4s on the moors above rossendale - it wouldnt be so bad if they just 'green laned' - but they have to spoil it for everyone and just go where they **** well please.

when alls said and done at least lee quarry is still usable by the public - i spent most of my childhood and early adulthood in lee quarry and surrounding area be it riding a trials bike, mountain biking, walking swimming, plinking an air rifle or having a beer in peace (and quiet) - many a sunday ive counted over a hundred people up there all using it in different ways.

At least it hasnt turned into another f***ing housing estate.

long live lee quarry!!!

all for it, Stacky says...
